CompTIA Tech+ is CompTIA's entry-level certification designed to provide a solid foundation in technological literacy. The course introduces essential modern computing concepts and prepares students to understand, use, and provide basic support for technologies commonly found in personal, educational, and professional settings.

The training covers computing fundamentals, infrastructure, software, data, networking, and security, with a practical approach focused on understanding how technology works and how to solve simple problems. CompTIA Tech+ is designed as a first step toward an IT career and as a natural progression to further certifications such as CompTIA A+.

Training objectives

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of computing, including the information processing cycle, number systems, and units of measurement.
  • Identify and understand the basic components of the technological infrastructure, such as devices, internal hardware, peripherals, and types of storage.
  • Configure and use common operating systems and applications, managing files, user profiles, and basic tools.
  • Understand the fundamentals of networking and connectivity, including wired and wireless networks and basic network devices.
  • Apply basic principles of computer security, recognizing common threats and adopting good practices for protecting data and devices.
  • Use a structured problem-solving methodology to diagnose and resolve simple hardware, software, or connectivity issues.

Course content

The CompTIA Tech+ course is structured in six training blocks, which cover the fundamental knowledge of technology, infrastructure, software, data and security necessary to get started in the IT field.

Module 1. IT Concepts and Terminology

  • Fundamentals of computing: input, processing, output, and storage.
  • Types of computer systems and devices.
  • Numbering systems: binary, decimal, hexadecimal and octal.
  • Units of measurement: storage, speed, and data transfer.
  • Basic problem-solving methodology (troubleshooting).

Module 2. Technological Infrastructure

  • Types of devices: computers, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, IoT devices, and servers.
  • Internal components: CPU, RAM, motherboards, storage, graphics and network cards.
  • Storage types: volatile and non-volatile, local, network, and cloud.
  • Peripherals: printers, monitors, scanners and input/output devices.
  • Interfaces and connections: USB, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, Bluetooth and NFC.
  • Fundamentals of virtualization and cloud models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
  • Basic networks: LAN and WAN, routers, switches and firewalls.
  • Wireless networks: Wi-Fi standards, speed, range and interference.

Module 3. Applications and Software

  • Types of operating systems: desktop, mobile, server, and embedded.
  • Components of an operating system: file systems, graphical and command-line interfaces.
  • Basic management of files, profiles and settings.
  • Types of software: productivity, collaboration, web browsers, and remote support.
  • Web browsers: privacy, extensions, password management and caching.
  • Introduction to the use of artificial intelligence: assistants, chatbots and generative tools.

Module 4. Software Development Concepts

  • Types of programming languages: compiled, interpreted, scripting, and markup.
  • Data types: numeric, strings, and boolean values.
  • Basic programming concepts: variables, constants, functions, arrays, and objects.
  • Logic and code organization: pseudocode, flowcharts, conditionals and loops.

Module 5. Data and Database Fundamentals

  • Importance of data and its use in decision making.
  • Types of databases: relational and non-relational.
  • Database structure: tables, records, fields, and keys.
  • Basic data usage: queries and report generation.
  • Backups: local and cloud-based.

Module 6. Basic Security

  • Account security and user authentication.
  • Password management and access control.
  • Common threats: malware, phishing, and usual risks.
  • Good practices for safe browsing and information protection.
  • Digital security awareness and computer hygiene.

CompTIA Tech+ Lab

The CompTIA Tech+ Lab offers hands-on experience in a wide range of IT skills, including virtualization, cloud computing, networking, operating systems, security, software programming, database management, and productivity tools. The lab aims to equip students with practical skills to implement local virtualization, manage cloud resources, troubleshoot network connectivity issues, install and configure operating systems, apply security measures, and use AI software and tools. This lab prepares students for the FC0-U71 exam .

Prerequisites

CompTIA states that there are no mandatory formal requirements to take the course or to sit the Tech+ exam. It is recommended, but not required:

  • Basic knowledge of using computers and digital devices.
    Interest in technology and its practical application.
  • The certification is specifically designed for beginners, high school students, and people with no prior professional experience in IT.
